A flat or slightly concave face can provide good stability and straightness control, while more aggressive profiles may be selected to achieve higher penetration rates in softer formations. The selection of steel grade, heat treatment parameters, and carbide grade is tailored to balance impact toughness with resistance to abrasion and thermal cracking.

Regular inspection for button wear, gauge loss, and cracking, combined with proper grinding of worn buttons, can extend service life and maintain drilling performance.
