A down-the-hole (DTH) drill bit is a specialized rock drilling tool used together with a DTH hammer to penetrate hard and abrasive formations. It is widely applied in mining, quarrying, water well drilling, geothermal projects, construction piling, and blast hole drilling. The arrangement and shape of carbide buttons also play a key role in bit performance. Spherical buttons provide excellent wear resistance and are suitable for very hard rock, while semi-ballistic or ballistic buttons offer faster penetration in medium to hard formations. The pattern of button placement is optimized to ensure efficient rock fragmentation, good hole cleaning, and even wear across the bit face.

Air circulation is another important feature of DTH drill bits. Flushing holes and air passages are engineered to deliver compressed air to the bottom of the hole, removing cuttings quickly and cooling the bit. Effective cuttings removal reduces regrinding of broken rock, lowers energy consumption, and helps maintain straightness and stability of the borehole.

DTH drill bits are produced in various diameters to match different hammer sizes and application requirements. They are typically connected to the hammer using standard thread types, which ensure secure coupling and easy replacement on site. Proper selection of bit diameter, face design, button shape, and carbide grade according to the rock conditions can significantly improve drilling speed, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize bit costs per meter.

Regular inspection and maintenance, such as checking for excessive wear, broken buttons, or cracks in the bit body, are essential to achieve maximum service life and safe operation. When used correctly, a DTH drill bit offers reliable performance, high penetration rates, and consistently straight boreholes in a wide variety of geological environments.
