Taper Button Bit
A taper button bit is a commonly used drilling tool for rock excavation, mining, quarrying, and construction works. It is designed for use with taper rod drill steels and is well suited for hand-held drilling, bench drilling, and small to medium-sized blast hole applications. The bit combines a tapered skirt section with hard, wear-resistant button inserts on the drilling face, providing effective rock-breaking performance and long service life in demanding conditions. The body of a taper button bit is usually made from high-quality alloy steel, heat-treated to achieve a balance between toughness and hardness. This ensures that the bit can withstand high impact and cyclic loading without cracking or deforming. The tapered shank section mates with a corresponding tapered socket in the drill rod, creating a secure mechanical connection that is easy to assemble and disassemble in the field. Common taper angles include 7°, 11°, and 12°, chosen according to the drilling method, rock conditions, and equipment used. The cutting elements are spherical or semi-ballistic cemented carbide buttons inserted into the bit head. Spherical buttons offer excellent resistance to wear and are suitable for very hard and abrasive rock formations, while semi-ballistic buttons provide faster penetration in medium-hard to slightly fractured rock. The number, size, and layout of the buttons are optimized to balance drilling speed, hole straightness, and bit life. A well-designed button pattern distributes impact energy evenly and helps prevent premature button breakage.Flushing holes are arranged on the bit head and connected to internal water or air channels. During drilling, air or water is forced through these holes to clean cuttings from the hole bottom and cool the bit. Efficient flushing is essential to maintain penetration rate, reduce wear, and prevent bit jamming. Depending on the application, the bit can be used with air flushing in dry conditions or water flushing in underground or dust-sensitive environments.Taper button bits are available in various diameters to match specific hole size requirements, typically ranging from small diameters for roof bolting and secondary blasting to larger sizes for production drilling in quarries and mines. They are suitable for a wide range of rock types, from soft and fractured formations to extremely hard and abrasive rock, provided the correct design and carbide grade are selected. In use, taper button bits offer several advantages: rapid bit changes, good energy transfer from the drill to the rock, stable hole trajectory, and reliable performance at relatively low operating costs. Regular inspection and proper sharpening, when applicable, can further extend their service life and maintain efficient drilling performance.
